Cosmopolitan-the New Hope for Las Vegas

Unfortunately, these hopes have failed to be met in the past few years. New casino resorts are expected to bring a return of patrons to the whole strip and revitalise a declining industry. This was the case last year when MGM Mirage and Dubai World opened CityCenter.

CityCenter didn’t live up to the expectations nor did it bring the anticipated boost to Las Vegas. Officials have now pinned their hopes on to a final mega project. The Cosmopolitan opened almost two weeks ago and casino execs are wishing for large crowds to descend upon their town to check out the new resort.

The opening of the Cosmopolitan comes very late in the year however many visitors to Las Vegas have already booked themselves a stay at the new resort or one of the surrounding casinos for the New Year’s holiday. If the new casino lives up to the hype, surrounding casinos could benefit greatly from the new resort in 2011.

The figures for gaming revenue in Las Vegas have dropped dramatically over the past few years. This is due to the economic recession and expansion in other states of the US. The state of Nevada has been forced to reconsider how they handle their gaming industry. Even the casinos have shifted their attitudes on certain issues.

Rather than opposing online gambling, many casino executives now support it, providing they are the recipients of such contracts.

Democrat Senator Harry Reid of Nevada tried to push an online poker bill during the last session of Congress. He pulled the legislation off the agenda when he realised that the Republicans would block the bill. Reid will try to pass the online gambling regulations at the federal level in 2011.
